Here, on the borders of the South, the desert takes on its full dimension. The large desert plateau of the Draa hamada, bordered by the eponymous wadi and its magnificent ribbon of palm groves, opens onto a wonderful world of dunes and ergs. The trek takes place there for four days, far from everything … It is there, under the stars, in the great Saharan silence, that one then fully apprehends the magic of the desert.

Day 4 :  Great erg of Mhazil – erg Smar

Head north to cross the Draa bed, filled with tamarisk and acacias, dry for a long time. The desert is a world to discover, hamadas, regs, ergs and trees that live despite the lack of water. According to the oldest camel (chibanis), this wadi once fed Lake Iriki, now a dry plateau. To be more precise, since 1972, with the construction of the El-Mansour-Eddhabi dam near Ouarzazate, Oued Draa has lost its ability to flood its long valley. Before that date, the silty floods filled Lake Iriki every year; Fish and birds lived there in abundance, the wadi continuing its route sometimes to the Atlantic Ocean. Today, dunes bar the passage of the water, and the wadi remains desperately arid. According to the rains, water is released two to five times a year, but it does not always happen in Ouled Driss.

Lunch in the shade of beautiful tamarisk in Lahdibat. The walk continues between trees and sands until the immense erg Smar, little frequented, where we install the camp. In the distance, ruins, the ancient houses of Mhamid-el-Ghouzlane, a village invaded by sand, and more to the west some date palms.

This is where we have an appointment with the vehicles. Between one and two hours of 4 × 4 for Ouled Driss where we arrive late afternoon.
